Minneapolis, MN (4-25-17)
Minnesota’s history with artists recognizable by one name are grooming a new singer-songwriter in Minneapolis’ Winterland recording studio. “Tomika.” Tomika was born in Iowa lived in Iowa and Florida for a few years before she returned to the family roots of the Great White North. Tomika is a self taught musician, She writes, plays and sings. Tomika has a growing catalog of songs culled from her varied life experiences.Tomika told me she prefers to be close lipped as to the content of her upcoming record. I was asked to promise not post any of the video from her recording session. Tomika agreed to allow Live Gig Shots to post her first release from the yet to be titled record. What I can say is that the 2 songs she worked on as I was in the studio echo an early Grace Potter and The Nocturnals. Even that may not sit well with Tomika who does not identify with any genre or a fan of comparisons.
Tomika is working with Winterland Studios producer, engineer Todd Fitzgerald on her debut recording. Todd and the staff at Winterland have worked with artists such as Alanis Morissette, Average White Band, Gypsy, David Grey, Elvis Costello, Brian Setzer, Jon Wayne and The Pain, Lenny Kravitz, Martin Zellar and Mike Gordan of Phish.
