Day 7 of the 7-day Concert Photography Challenge, which fellow photographer Luke Adam: Luke Awtry Photography nominated me for. Since this is the final post for the challenge, I'm going to include a small gallery of photos to accompany the story.
Navytrain | The Radio Bean - Halloween, October 2016 opener for Mal Maiz
The Rusty Nail | February 2017 - Special Guests for 'Mihali & Frends' ft. Mihali Savoulidis & Zdenek Parker Gubb of Twiddle, Pappy of Cabinet, members of Trey Anastasio Band - Soule Monde (Ray Paczkowski & Russ Lawton), & Adrian of Kung Fu.
Navytrain is such a unique trio, who put forth deeply moving lyrics and sound. Students at UVM currently, they are making themselves known on the music scene very quickly, as they approach their final days in college.
By chance, I walked into the Light Club Lamp Shop for their very first live performance, in September 2016. My friend Brad Hester, from Annie in the Water, invited me to go for a hike and afterwards suggested that we go to the Radio Bean to see what was going on. We meandered there, and he was quickly requested by the band who was about to go on, to stay for their set. I joined to hang, but wasn't really into the music. I heard an incredible voice coming from the Lamp Shop, and decided that I should go and see what was happening. As I entered I noticed that the vibe was so vastly different from one space to another. Immediately, I was blown away by what I was hearing - it was incomparable to anything I had heard yet coming out of Burlington. It was inspiring, emotionally stirring, soulful and beautiful all at once.
Typically, I go out to see live music in a less spontaneous way - a show that I'm stoked about which I make plans to go to, an opportunity to photograph a favorite band/musicin, or an invitation to experience new music. Having been in the right place at the right time, led me to discovering Navytrain. A month later, they played at the Radio Bean where they opened for Mal Maiz' Halloween performance - another favorite of mine from Burlington. After shooting this show, I felt full of inspiration to put to together an interview with them. You can check out their first interview, with Live Gig Shots, here: www.livegigshots.com/interviews/navytrain-a-soulful-sound-of-burlington-vt/
Learning that they had just started playing together as musicians only several months prior to their first show was shocking, because they sounded as if they had been playing together for some time. Their story is sweet - attending many of their shows, and watching them evolve and grow over the past 6 months has been incredible. Their music came into my experience at a very important time for me - one of major transition and life changes, as well as deep healing - I am so grateful to have been able to watch their path as a band unfold in the ways that it has.
After only a few shows, they picked up a month-long tour worth of gigs. Within several months, they were discovered by Mihali of Twiddle, and were asked to open for several of his solo sets at Waterworks Food + Drink in Winooski. They were then invited as special guests to open for the 'Mihali & Frends' show at The Rusty Nail in February, as well as to play Twiddle's Tumble Down July 28-29 on the Burlington Waterfront this coming summer! And, in a recent 'Battle of the Bands', won a position to play the Official UVM SpringFest 2017 ft Two Door Cinema Club! In such a short period of time, this trio's music has touched so many people, that they are making headway in the music scene at a speed that I have yet to witness before. Their music is very special and I highly recommend checking them out live if you get the chance. You can also find their music on Youtube & Spotify.
I nominate George Burrows of Live Gig Shots to partake in the 7-day live music photography challenge! George has been a huge supporter of my photography & writing, taking me on to the Live Gig Shots team - a grassroots supporter of Live Music, based out of Chicago. George is an incredible photographer, and a kind heart. I'm stoked to see what you choose to put out there George! Go to my page & read the original post for the guidelines! Also, to spice things up a bit, I wish to add a rule - that as you share your posts, you also share to the Live Gig Shots page, so everyone who supports it can enjoy as well!
Compiled from a selection of opening live improvisations performed by Markus on Touch Guitar throughout The Crimson ProjeKCt’s Spring 2014 European Tour. These instant compositions set the tone for each concert and provided a launch pad for the two drummers to begin their drum duet.
