Mel Schacher and Don Brewer with Grand Funk Railroad The American Band

In 1969 Grand Funk Railroad were a power trio consisting of Mark Farner, Don Brewer and Mel Schacher. Records like On Time (1969) and Grand Funk (1969) influenced the hard rock genre. In 1970 Closer to Home showed a more melodic often epic sound that would eventually lead to a more R&B/Rock/Pop quartet.  GFR went through managerial problems, founding member  lead vocalist/guitarist Mark Farmer left the band.

Fast forward to 2012 and the band is now Grand Funk Railroad The American Band. Don and Mel are the remaning original members of the GFR power days. Unfortunately the band have lost their edge and have decided to capitalize on their hit An American Band, added members from Kiss, Bob Seger Silver Bullet Band and .38 special, making them a draw to the fair/casino venues.  They have joined other 1970 icons CCR as Creedence Clearwater Revisited, both are now cover bands of their own material. I was excited to see and hear Mel and Don play, as I was not fortunate enough to attend a GFR show.
