Iowa City, IA (March, 04,2015)

Iowa City welcomed  South African duo multi -instrumentalist Hugh Masekela and singer-songwriter/guitarist Vusi Mahlasela’s 20 Years of Freedom tour to The Englert Theatre.  In their native South Africa they share iconic stature. Masekela may be best known in the United States for his crossover 1968 jazz-hit “Grazing in the Grass.” Undoubtedly Masekela has played “Grazzin” more times than he’d care to remember. Hugh Masekela holds a top spot on my favorite  5 trumpeters list which include Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry Don Cherry and Miles Davis. Masekela’s  solo on “Grazzin” solidifies my love of his craft.  Vusi Mahlasela had been completely off my radar until my attendance at “20 Years of Freedom.”

Hugh Masekela and Vusi Mahlasela delivered the goods in style, both demonstrating that personal sincerity, compassion  mixed with lots of group participation equals freedom, “A F R I C A!”
