Gov’t Mule Des Moines, Iowa 8-22-10

By

Des Moines, Iowa (August 22, 2o10)-It has become nearly an annual event for Gov’t  Mule to play down by the river in Des Moines. 2010 was however a bit different. Flooding caused the show to be moved to higher ground on the Walnut St. Bridge over looking the Des Moines River.

Starting the show was Jackie Greene who brought his folk  tinged vocals and deadish  guitar work to a small but appreciative crowd. Jackie has been a long time favorite of Warren’s and has been the opening act on this led of his tour. Warren joined Jackie on stage during his opening set for a smoking version of Jerry Garcia’s “Sugaree.”

After the sun began to go down, Gov’t Mule took the stage opening the set with “Bad Little Doggie”, “Steppin Lightly” and “Brok Down On The Brazos” from their new album, “By a Thread.”
Warren wasted no time bringing out his trademark covers. They eased into a faithful version of Traffic’s “Empty Pages.” Another staple cover, Van Morrison’s ” Into The Mystic” was given the Mule treatment and is also a favorite of the Allman Brothers Band, who Warren has played in for over 20 years.
The show was the final night of the current tour, which meant a few surprises. First off was a new version of “Soulshine,” featuring a Warren Haynes extended opening guitar intro. Warren also debuted a new Tom Waits cover,   “Jesus Gonna Be Here,” which followed a soulful “John The Revelator.”

The Mule closed the show by bringing out Jackie Greene for “Loser,” followed by Jackie Greene and his band on a cover of The Beatles, “Don’t Let Me Down.”

The closing number was the seal to a picture perfect evening of Mule penned tunes and covers that did not let anyone down.
